Over the past months, we’ve had the chance to get to know our amazing candidates, and we think they will be outstanding leaders for Douglas County Schools. We are sharing a few key Q&As that illustrate why we’re excited to support their candidacy and share their vision for our students, educators, and community.
DCP proudly endorses Kyrzia Parker because she is a passionate advocate for equity, inclusion, and student well-being. As a mental health professional, DCSD alum, and parent, she will bring a critical voice to the board to ensure every child has the resources and support they need to reach their individual potential.
Meet Kyrzia Parker, running for DCSD School Board Director, District B.
“I know firsthand what it’s like to navigate Douglas County as a student, being on an IEP and 504 as well as taking academically rigorous classes and being very involved in school. Working in the school, I know what our educators can be up against at times. Now, being a parent in the school, I am deeply invested that our education system is the best it can be.”
Why are you running for school board, and what values will guide your decisions?
I am running for school board because I deeply care about our community. The values that guide my decisions are equity and accessibility, transparency and accountability, and student-centered decision making.
How has your experience prepared you to serve students, educators, and families in Douglas County?
As a former DCSD student and employee and now a parent, I believe I have lots of experience to prepare me to serve. I know firsthand what it’s like to navigate Douglas County as a student, being on an IEP and 504 as well as taking academically rigorous classes and being very involved in school. Working in the school, I know what our educators can be up against at times. Now, being a parent in the school, I am deeply invested that our education system is the best it can be.
What are your top three budget priorities, and how will you balance them given limited state funding?
My budget priorities are: educator retention, mental health support services and minimizing legal risk so our county tax dollars can stay in the classroom. I will try to balance this given limited state funding by making sure we are aware of grants, advocating for money to continue going where it is promised, and not wasting money on frivolous lawsuits.
In Colorado’s school choice system — with open enrollment, district and CSI charters, private options, and vouchers — what is the role of a Douglas County School Board director, and how should these choices impact DCSD students, teachers, and resources?
I think Douglas County School Board directors need to honor the Colorado school choice system, and at the same time protecting our county's resources and students. Choice is important to many families in Colorado, and we need to make sure that families' choices are not taking away resources from other families.
How will you ensure that all voices in the community — especially students, parents, and teachers — are heard in decision making?
I have been thinking about this a lot. I plan on meeting with current board directors to see what actual things can be implemented to achieve this. Other than concrete ideas, I’m hoping that we can recruit new and diverse members to the different current committees. When I went to the recent board retreat, there was one student representative, I would love to see more! I also assume the community will take use of public comment during board meetings and reach out via email. I will want to prioritize an email system where I do feel like I’m getting a true representation of the community.
How will you support teachers and staff so they can focus on educating students?
Being in the classroom, and being part of the slate with other educators, I will make decisions supporting teachers with firsthand experience. I will make sure I look through their lens before implementing policies that impact them directly. When possible, I will ask for feedback and guidance from our educators. And within reason, I am also in favor of all recruitment and retention strategies for our educators.
